Money and your relationship: how to do it smartly?

In Finance Flash, Elfin provides you with the most important, salient news from the world of finance. This time: Elfin’s Lieke on money in your relationship on NU.nl.

Talking about money with your partner. Making agreements about money with your partner. Is there anyone who does enjoy doing it? But that it has some payoff is clear by now. The other day Elfin’s Adeline spoke with a couples therapist about being financially (un)dependent on your partner, and Elfin’s Lieke also recently shared her knowledge.

Lieke was allowed to share her story in an article for NU.nl. The clue to the story? Talk to your partner about your finances, even if you feel terrible about it. After all, it can prevent money problems as well as arguments in the future.

How Lieke handles that herself? You can read about how she manages her finances as a mother in Koters & Kosten, but for NU.nl she took a closer look at having a joint, fairly divided account. In fact, her and her partner’s money goes into one joint account, from which all fixed expenses are then paid and money is transferred to savings. And what remains of that goes in half. ‘Well fair, because just because one of the two earns less doesn’t mean that person contributes less to the family,’ is Lieke’s reasoning. ‘It also prevents us from arguing about what the other person spends their money on.’

And yes, money is indeed discussed on a weekly basis. Because Lieke is aware of the dangers of not talking openly about finances with your partner, but she also thinks money is just a really fun topic. Get it.
